I wrote that blog post first thing, and then I started my business day with a call to the department of taxes to try and clear up a mysterious fine I had been hit with. Which turned into a snowball once I realized what was going on.
Now, I know that working that job at the Tax Department must make you have some pretty tough days. Imagine all the vitriol you must get being the one who answers the phone call from people like me in a bad position. So, I decided to "kill him with kindness" and it ended up working, because he helped me in the end... after a very stern lecture. Still, the whole ordeal shot my anxiety through the roof. Had I only known that this was going to be the easy part of my day, I would have taken more time to enjoy it.
I emailed my realtor for a second day, because she has totally gone MIA. I have NO information about the house, contracts, nothing. No contact, and it's totally bizarre. I've known this woman for over two years, and the only thing I can think is that the tragedy at her office (one of her friends and co-workers passed in a shocking way about a week ago) has finally hit and she's just gone off the grid. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do, though. We have a live offer situation going on with that other house... so I sent the two emails, but I'm too afraid to call and ask anything because I don't want to intrude.
After my run, I took a shower. It was sort of cold, which was odd, but I didn't think too much of it. Well, until I went to get more tea from my basement pantry and noticed a lot of water everywhere. I started investigating the source of the water and discovered not one, but TWO leaks coming from my boiler/heater. This is the first time I have ever seen water leak from a boiler (normally you'd see that with the water tank or filter, etc.) I stuck buckets and pans where I could, flipped the breaker on the boiler, and called for help.
Once the plumbing/heating guy got here and started working, he came back up the stairs and said "Ma'am" (Yes, I'm a Ma'am now *sigh*) "Did you know you're completely out of propane?"
No. No, I did not. Especially since I'm on a contract of monthly deliveries, so this should never happen. This was just a side bonus, nothing to do with the leaks on the boiler.
The man fixed the boiler and left while I made a call to the gas company. Again, I went for killing them with kindness because let's face it; I'm at the begging for help point. No heat, no hot water, leaks in my basement. It has not been a good day. The man I reached at the gas company laughed along with me about my crazy day, and then told me they couldn't find our contract at all, but could he call me back because they're under staffed and that's probably why?
Yeah, sure. Why not?
At this point I was starting to think a nice glass of wine with dinner might be a good thing.
While I was waiting for the call back, I heard water... AGAIN, from the basement.
This time it was my water softener. I don't know what was wrong but it was running incessantly, and shooting water out a tube out the side of the house (it's supposed to, but it's not supposed to run constantly) and somehow the tube had waggled the wrong way and I had water coming back in. I flipped the breaker on that, but the water kept coming. I ended up shutting down water to the entire house and that finally stopped it.
The gas guy called back at that moment and the first thing he said after I squeaked out a hello was "Hey, you're phone works, so that's a good thing, right?" Ok, it was funny. I laughed, but it was a little forced as I had the whole water softener issue... which I told him about. He asked if I was waiting for the hidden camera people to show up.
At this point I was starting to think a couple of nice glasses of wine with dinner might be a good thing.
Good news; there was a truck in my area that could make a mini-emergency delivery to tide us over until the big truck came the next day. Yay. Bad news; no idea where the contract was but they'll keep looking. The gas guy that showed up had been briefed on my day and thought it was all pretty funny too.
Once we had gas and all the pilots were relit, I was able to flip the breakers and the water softener behaved itself and nothing else leaked. At this point, it was dinner time (I managed to roast a whole chicken while all of this was going on, by the way. Nothing like the plumbing guy telling you that you are out of gas while you have your hand up the butt of a raw chicken.) My husband came home with my prints I had ordered and I found they were wrong, and have to be fixed. Then he informed me about his bad day and the new health insurance policies at his work which may make it cheaper to buy insurance on our own than go through the company because their sole purpose is to screw you over at this point (essentially tripling what we spend now per month, and it's a lot to start with!)
And then the phone rang, and I found out one of my business events (not this weekend, but next weekend) is cancelled because the building it was going to be held in has failed air standards testing, and tested positive for contagion mold.
After that, I went right past the wine and we pulled out the rum, and unplugged the phone. I had been hearing Captain Jack Sparrow's voice all day in my head anyway (why is the rum gone?!)
There may have been chocolate too. I'm looking at yesterday as my treat day, and I'm going to behave myself as best I can over the weekend instead (even though I have the back to back art fair days, makes eating almost impossible - so we'll see what happens.) But I think it's fair to say that my head basically left the building yesterday. I'm hoping today is better.
I'm trying to see my silver linings, and here's what I have:
- It's just speculation, but I'm wondering if running out of propane allowed the boiler and pipes to drop temperature enough to reveal leaks that were there but we weren't aware of and might have been a bigger mess if not caught now.
- I now have next weekend off (even though I won't be making any money now, I'm getting so burned out that maybe this is a good thing. Maybe.)
- Unless the house burns down, today should look pretty good by comparison!
That's all I've got.
I'm keeping my head down and just trying to paint today. It feels to risky to do anything else!
